The trio performs the 30-minute Flying and a 6-minute Prism, both of them Jarrett originals. Flying, which has several sections, keeps ones interest througout while the more concise Prism has a beautiful melody. It is a nice change to hear Jarrett (who normally plays unaccompanied) interacting with a trio of superb players. This is clear as soon as Orbits comes crashing out the gate, but its not just the fast, manic material that has an edge slower, quieter numbers are mercurial, not just in how they shift melodies and chords, but how the voicing and phrasing never settles into a comfortable groove. The collection starts off with a bang featuring Rebeccas highly regarded rendition of Spanish Harlem, considered an audiophile classic. The release hosts key selections from each of Rebeccas albums including such favorites as 24 Hours of Love, Fhear a Bhata, and Primitive Man. Retrospective finishes gallantly with the inspiring piece that combines spoken word by husband and famous playwright David Mamet with Sam Cookes Bring It On Home To Me, all warmly overlaid with Robert Burns famous poem Auld Lang Syne. While her Celtic melodies set the mood, her lyrics tell stories, full, rich, textured, and open hearted. The Raven marks the U.S. Chesky Records most striking, powerful and fully realized vocal record to date. This album contains a thoughtful selection of songs from the Cy Coleman songbook. Together, this collection weaves together the opposing talents of the sultry jazz sensation Claire Martin and the polished, savvy keyboard skills and compositional insight of Richard Rodney Bennett. Martins strength as one of the best interpreters of the Great American Songbook shines through in this recording. The smoky elegance of her vocal sculpts itself around the smooth flowing textures of the piano accompaniment and the occasional vocal repartee of Bennett. Jarrett, who has often taken himself a bit too seriously, is surprisingly playful at times in this format. In addition to Jarretts So Tender, there are such superior songs explored on this date as Alec Wilders Moon and Sand, If I Should Lose You and I Fall in Love Too Easily. Bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette listen closely to Jarrett and no matter what direction the pianist turns, they are already there waiting for him. Percussionist Nan Vasconcelos is still listed as a special guest, but ever since Wichita Falls, he had not only been a part of the group, he was the transforming element in the Metheny sound, adding his various shakers, effects and ethereal vocals. But beyond there is also and nice mix of varying jazz tracks taken from previously released albums within their label. Favorites will certainly depend on what you like as songs range from the opening reggae infused track, Reggae-Later by Monty Alexanders Ivory Steel to The Real Blues, a live recording by The Ray Brown Trio to a solo piano tune called Silent Pool which closes out the album. Good stuff. Read More. ![]() I dont know which impressed me more: the lushness of her voice or the vividness of her interpretations. Here surely would be a recital of rare sympathy: one of the most purely romantic of all lyricists interpreted by one of the most ravishingly beautiful voices to come along in jazz and popular music this last quarter century. Few new singers of standards display as much awareness of the performing traditions of the American popular song as this Singapore-born and raised jazz singer, whose first album for Groove Note paid explicit tribute to the great tenor saxophonist Ben Webster.
